Position Function:

Duties include safely operating wood processing and composites equipment, conducting varying safety checks, assisting faculty and other researchers with processing, testing, technical writing. Job requires personal contact with faculty, staff, material suppliers, graduate students, grant contractors, visiting scientists, and other agency personnel concerning ongoing departmental work and activities. Additional functions include working with departmental committees, supporting researchers, and working with computers, software packages, and networks.

Salary Grade: 11

Department Profile:

One of three departments in the College of Forest Resources, the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts activities include undergraduate/graduate instructions, research and service programs in natural resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Purchasing or acquisition of supplies required for research projects.

Operate and maintain portable and stationary wood processing equipment.

Provide support for researchers, administration, and other staff as required.

Maintenance of research records, material safety and data records, wood composite test data, laboratory test procedures, and equipment literature.

Lead role in calibration of equipment used in wood composite research.

Assist researchers in the collection of information and analytical data through observation, experimentation, and utilization of various equipment to conduct research.

Assistance to faculty, visiting scientists, research staff, graduate and undergraduate students in preparation and implementation of research and teaching activities.

Participation in laboratory committees, such as safety and marketing.

Perform mechanical testing as assigned.

Assist with editorial or technical writing as assigned.

Periodic as needed checks of communal environmental conditioning chambers.

Maintain equipment, oversee upgrades and calibration of and provide technical support and training to faculty and staff in regards to operation of composite wood products equipment in Building 2. This includes overseeing cleaning of the area.

Monthly safety inspections of lab fume hoods, emergency showers, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, safety equipment in Labs and Woodshop.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with major course work in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment.

Two years of post-secondary training in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment and two years of field and lab work experience including experimentation and research studies or closely related work experience.

High school education or equivalent plus four years of field and/or lab work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Basic college or vocational course work in wood products, forestry, computer technology, quality assurance, and statistics.

Baccalaureate level degree in forest products or related field

Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds

Demonstrated technical writing skills

Interest in environmental health and safety

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Operate and maintain electric and hydraulically actuated universal testing machine frames.

Operate and maintain environmental humidity chambers.

Operate and maintain woodworking equipment.

Assist with machine shop operations.

Machine wood specimens as needed.

Work with outside contractors such as deionized water and boiler chemical providers.

Provide support for researchers, administration, and other staff as required.

Improve safety throughout the departmental complex.

Safely and efficiently operate forklift and golf carts.

Working knowledge of wood processing equipment.

Demonstrated ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Receives supervision and/or direction from designated faculty member(s), scientists, or department head. No formal supervisory responsibility. Must have ability and responsibility to carry out and assist with tasks as assigned with limited direction. Must be able to prioritize scheduling, deal with frequent interruptions, and perform emergency consultation, during the course of research.
