Job Description:
The Surgical Assistant will maintain a sterile field in the
operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper
aseptic techniques are used to prevent contamination and infection.
The Surgical Assistant will also assist the surgical team as the
sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during
surgery.
Procedure Preparation:
- Uses procedure preference lists
- Selects & arranges supplies, instruments and equipment for
surgical procedures
- Maintains sterile set for operation(s)
- Provides preoperative skills, i.e. assess patient information,
history, preop tests, safety measures, biopsy results, etc.Surgeon
Assistant: Actively assist the surgeon in completing the operation;
to include but not limited to:
- Assist with intraoperative positioning, preoperative
positioning and draping, insertion of foley catheter
- Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for
laboratory analysis, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and applies
dressings.
- Visualization, trocar insertion, injection of local
anesthetics, hemostasis, tissue handling, would drains, closure of
body plane
- Application of dressings, casts; preparation of grafts
- Knowledge of / use of open procedure equipment necessary for
procedures.
Clinic Coverage:
- Works closely with physicians and office staff to ensure
patient, staff and surgeon needs are met
Patient Advocate:
- Protects patients from potential injury and contamination of
sterile fieldCommunication / Record Keeping
- Assist with restocking supplies
- Assist with straightening operating room for next use
- Must be able to take primary call duties for their specialty
(as assigned)Education:
- Attends required in-services, annual review and educational
programsRegulatory:
- Knowledge and practice of standards of care,
policies/procedures established by North Mississippi Medical Center
Job Knowledge:
- High School graduate or equivalent required; Associates degree
preferred
- Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology;
required
- Certified Surgical First Assistant; required
- 1 year work experience in a clinical environment;
preferred
- American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification at HCP Level
required
- Three to six months of orientation/training depending on
experience
- Orientation will include a rotation in each of the surgical
specialties
- Must have good written and verbal communication skills
- Interaction with a patient population of all ages ranging from
neonates to geriatrics, required
